The Most Common Marketing Mistakes We Find During Home Service Website Audits

Most home service companies think they have a traffic problem. After auditing hundreds of websites over the years, we’ve found that’s often not the case. More often than not, they have a conversion problem.

The website is getting visitors. The issue is that those visitors aren’t turning into calls, form submissions, and booked appointments. At Nuvo Agency, we’ve worked with home service companies ranging from startups to businesses generating tens of millions in annual revenue. One thing continues to surprise us: The same mistakes show up over and over again. And many of them have nothing to do with SEO rankings.

Mistake #1: Making It Difficult for People to Contact You

This is by far the most expensive mistake we find. If a homeowner wants to contact you and can’t immediately figure out how, you’ve already lost.

It sounds simple, but we’d estimate a significant percentage of websites still make it harder than necessary to call, submit a form, or request service. Common issues include:

  • No click-to-call phone number
  • No call button on mobile
  • Contact forms hidden deep in the site
  • Contact information only available on the Contact page

One thing we firmly believe is that a user should have access to a contact method no matter where they are on the website. If someone is ready to call, don’t make them go looking for the phone number.

Mistake #2: Hiding Revenue-Producing Services in Mobile Navigation

This is probably the most common issue we find. Many websites have decent desktop navigation but completely fall apart on mobile. Since 65-70% of traffic for most home service companies now comes from mobile devices, this is a major problem. One pattern we see repeatedly is service pages being buried under multiple dropdown menus.

For example:

Services → Residential Services → Waterproofing Services → Basement Waterproofing

The problem? Many users never get that far. If someone can’t quickly find the service they need, they can’t make a conversion decision. Your most important services should be easy to find, especially on mobile.

Mistake #3: No CTA Above the Fold

Most homeowners don’t scroll as far as business owners think they do. In fact, many visitors never make it beyond the top portion of a page. Yet we routinely audit websites where the first call-to-action doesn’t appear until halfway down the page. A homeowner should immediately see:

  • What you do
  • Who you serve
  • How to contact you

A strong service page often starts with something simple:

Expert Basement Waterproofing Services

Protect your home from water damage with trusted basement waterproofing solutions.

[Call Now] [Request an Estimate]

Mistake #4: Service Pages That Don't Match Search Intent

This may be the biggest marketing mistake we see today. A lot of agencies have spent years telling businesses they need “more content.”

The result?

Service pages that look more like educational articles.

The problem is that service pages and educational pages serve different purposes.

If someone searches:

“Foundation Repair Company Near Me”

They’ve already identified the problem.

They’re looking for:

  • A contractor
  • Proof of experience
  • Reviews
  • Warranties
  • Financing
  • A way to contact you

They’re not necessarily looking for a 3,000-word explanation of what foundation repair is. One of the most important things we evaluate during audits is whether the content matches the intent behind the search.

Mistake #5: Prioritizing Rankings Over Conversions

This is where many marketing agencies get it wrong. They focus entirely on:

  • Rankings
  • Traffic
  • Impressions
  • Keyword counts

Those metrics matter. But they don’t pay the bills. The real question is what happens after someone reaches your website If a page ranks well but nobody converts, the problem isn’t necessarily the ranking. The problem may be:

  • The wrong audience
  • Poor messaging
  • Weak CTAs
  • Search intent mismatch

Traffic without conversions is just an expensive vanity metric.

Mistake #6: Missing Trust Signals

One thing we consistently notice is how many companies underestimate the importance of trust. Homeowners are inviting someone into their home. They need reasons to feel comfortable. The most commonly missing trust elements include:

  • Customer reviews
  • Warranty information
  • Financing options
  • Project photos
  • Before-and-after galleries

What surprises us most is how often these items exist but are buried deep within the website. If your company offers financing or a strong warranty, don’t make customers hunt for it.

Mistake #7: Relying on Stock Photos

We’ve audited countless websites that use generic stock images showing smiling homeowners and technicians that don’t actually work for the company. The problem is that homeowners have become very good at recognizing stock photography. Real photos build trust. Real projects build trust. Real team members build trust. When possible, use actual images of:

  • Your technicians
  • Your projects
  • Your trucks
  • Your office
  • Your customers’ results

Authenticity converts better than perfection.

Mistake #8: Overvaluing Chat Widgets

This may be controversial. We don’t love chat widgets for most home service companies. That’s because most homeowners don’t actually need a live chat conversation. They usually need one of two things:

  • A phone call
  • A contact form

In our experience, chat systems often create more conversations than qualified leads. Many modern chat tools are powered by AI and provide generic answers that don’t move the customer closer to booking service. We’ve never encountered a homeowner who left a home service website because there wasn’t a live chat feature.

What We Tell Home Service Companies Most Often

After auditing hundreds of websites, one thing has become clear: Most companies don’t need more traffic first. They need to do a better job converting the traffic they already have. Before investing heavily into more SEO, more ads, or more content, ask yourself:

  • Can visitors easily find my services?
  • Can they contact me instantly?
  • Does the page match what they searched for?
  • Do I provide reasons to trust my company?

If the answer is no, fixing those issues often generates results faster than chasing more traffic.

The Biggest Lesson We’ve Learned

If we could fix only one thing on most home service websites, it would be this: Match the page to the intent of the search. Educational searches deserve educational content. Service searches deserve service pages. If someone already knows they need basement waterproofing, foundation repair, HVAC replacement, or roofing services, your job isn’t to spend the next 2,000 words convincing them the problem exists. Your job is to show them why they should hire you. That’s where conversions happen. And ultimately, that’s what a website is supposed to do.
